What matching actually is
On a Honda Sensing car the multipurpose camera unit behind the windshield and the millimeter wave radar behind the grille are a pair. They expect each other. Drop in a used Honda Sensing camera from a salvage yard, or a replacement radar after a theft, and the two no longer agree — the system reports the pair as not matched and throws a camera radar unmatch code.
Matching is what makes those two units accept each other again. It is a bench job on the parts, not a job on the car — which is why it can be done by mail. It applies to camera part numbers 36160-TBA-A13, 36160-TBA-A130-M1 and 36160-TBA-A04, and radar part numbers 36803-TLA-A06 and 36803-TVA-A17.
What ADAS calibration actually is
Calibration teaches the car where those sensors are pointing. The radar gets aimed, the forward camera gets calibrated against targets at measured distances, with the vehicle level and the tires at spec. It has nothing to do with whether the two units recognize each other — a perfectly matched pair can still be aimed at the guardrail instead of the car in front of you.
That's why a windshield shop's calibration will never clear an unmatch code, and why matching will never substitute for a calibration.
