Repair guide

Used MIB2 radio says "Component Protection"? Here's why.

You swapped in a used MIB2 radio and now it shows a Component Protection warning, mutes the audio or locks features. That's an anti-theft lock tied to the car it came from, and it can be removed.

Signs of Component Protection

  • • "Component Protection" message on the screen
  • • No sound, or audio cuts out after a few seconds
  • • Some features locked or missing
  • • Radio worked fine in the donor car
  • • Fault code for component protection active in the radio

What Component Protection is

Volkswagen and Audi link each radio to the car it was built for. When a radio is moved into a different car, it notices the mismatch and locks itself to discourage theft.

The dealer can unlock it only by going online with the factory system, which is slow and expensive and often isn't offered for used parts. Removing component protection lets the MIB2 unit work in your car.
